Saturday John 19:17-30

Jesus is led to the place of crucifixion and executed.

John does not provide as much detail about the crucifixion as the other gospel writers. His focus is the big picture of God’s plan playing out. Pilate ordered that a sign be place above Jesus saying that he was the king of the Jews. The Jewish leaders objected, but Pilate would not relent.

John points out that the soldiers casting lots for his clothing is a fulfillment of Psalm 22. It also ties Jesus to David, the king of the Jews.

We also see Jesus charging John with caring for his mother. John said that from that hour, he took her into his home.

Jesus said he was thirsty, then immediately after drinking some of the wine, he died. Was this symbolic of him drinking the cup from the Father? He said “It is finished.” He had accomplished what he came to do. He did on the cross what was necessary to take care of the sin of those who would follow him. Then he bowed his head and gave up his spirit. Nobody took it from him. As he had said earlier, he laid down his life; nobody took his life from him.

Jesus was obedient to the Father’s plan. I look at my calling, and it is nothing compared to what Jesus had to do, yet I complain about how hard I have it.

Today I see two things I find interesting.

The first is that there seem to be a lot of women waiting at the cross named Mary. Why are there three Marys standing in front of three crosses looking at one Jesus dying? Is that somehow a "seven" thing? Or just a case of alot of women named Mary back then?

The second is that Jesus' cross is placed in the center of the other two crosses. That leaves Him, completely innocent of any crimes, in the middle with two completely guilty criminals - one on His left and the other His right.

One of the criminals insults Jesus but the other criminal admits his guilt and begs for Jesus to remember him. That criminal is forgiven by Jesus (Luke 23:42-44).

This is a perfect picture of what happens with salvation - both criminals are guilty, but the one who admits his guilt has it taken away and lives in Heaven. The one who denies his guilt dies in it and goes to Hell.

This looks alot like what we're told in Matthew 25:31-46 how when Jesus returns to judge the world He will separate the sheep from the goats putting the sheep on His right and the goats on His left - sheep representing those who admit their guilt and confess they are sinners and are following Jesus. The goats representing the nay sayers who, because of pride, deny they need a saviour.

Deception (lost/lack of knowledge); willful strife; lukewarm; These are three categories for sinners... We are all sinners and can place ourselves into anyone of these categories. The only way out is to be redeemed. We are redeemed by faith when we put our trust in Christ. FAITH -- is EVIDENCE that you BELIEVE in something that NO ONE can SEE or perceive with the eye or PROVE beyond a shadow of DOUBT. But we are called to come into this fullness, why because we lost it in when Adam and Eve sinned. We were removed and in order to get back we must be responsive to the call... This responsiveness to the call brings up many more facets of Christians today. Those who have strengthen their spiritual walk with the Lord will be more adept to hear the call on there life. Obedience to these calls is what draws us closer to Him. It is not a feeling alone. It is not a knowledge of His given Word alone. It is knowledge of Christ -- to know CHRIST. Christ Jesus is the name of God (Father/Son and HOLY GHOST). Knowledge of Christ is Knowledge of God. We will not know completely this side of heaven. But if we strive to know and do not give up trying to make Him known through us, then He is faithful and just to save us in the end, FINISHING the work HE began in us.

be not deceived loved ones; Love God with all of your strength;
